Nina Yim is a Doctor of Music student in Piano Performance at Florida State University. Originally from Hong Kong, she began studying piano at the age of five and later trained through the Junior Music Program at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. At 16, she was awarded the Fellowship of Trinity College London (FTCL) in Piano Performance, the highest performance diploma conferred by Trinity College London and a qualification recognized internationally for performance at a professional level.
Nina completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma at the Collegio del Mondo Unito dell'Adriatico in Trieste, Italy, where she maintained an active performance schedule. She was awarded First Prize at both the 12th Ars Nova International Music Competition in Trieste, Italy, and the Dino Škrapić Piano Competition in Labin, Croatia.
She earned her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from St. Olaf College, where she was selected as the featured soloist with the St. Olaf Orchestra. During her undergraduate studies, she was awarded First Prize in the Thursday Musical Young Artist Scholarship Competition and the Schubert Club Bruce P. Carlson Student Scholarship Competition. She subsequently earned a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Florida State University, where she presented at both the MTNA Collegiate Symposium and the MTNA National Conference.
As both performer and educator, Nina is committed to connecting artistic excellence with meaningful community engagement. She has performed throughout China, Italy, Croatia, and the United States, and currently serves as Music Director at Lake Jackson United Methodist Church while maintaining an active private teaching studio in Tallahassee. A former Graduate Assistant and instructor of collegiate group piano at Florida State University, she is passionate about cultivating thoughtful, confident, and independent musicians through engaging, individualized instruction.
Her principal teachers and mentors include Dr. Cheng Wai, Marie-Laure Muller, Cristina Santin, Dr. Kathryn Ananda-Owens, Dr. Heidi Louise Williams, Dr. Diana Dumlavwalla, and Dr. Read Gainsford. She has also performed in masterclasses with Jake Heggie, Sean Chen, Tanya Gabrielian, Thomas Lanners, and Theresa Bogard.
